Kicking it off right, kind of......

This weekend proved to be a combination of high highs and low lows. Hincapie Barkley kicked off the first races for the team last weekend and it was a sight to be seen. Saturday was the hindy hell fest that is Donaldson center. I wasn't going into either of the races last weekend with any hope of personal success but the team rode well. Although we struggled to function as a team, we took the sprint finish in the field missing the break. I rolled a tubular, ate face, and DNF'd the first race of the season. booo.

Sunday proved a little more interesting. Although the weather was a bit "cold" meaning low 50's and cloudy in Greenville, the lovely throb of BMW motors drifting through the center of the BMW Test Track which was hosting the race must have gotten a bug up our butts. The team rode amazingly well taking fourth behind three impressively good riders in Andy Baker (professional), Scotty Weiss (ex-pro and national champion), and Spencer Beamer (Pro and super sprinter). Overall a fun weekend and good fitness was gained. It was great to see the team organize a leadout THREE LAPS out, although it didn't work, it showed that the team is willing to do what it takes to win. Big change for me I must say!

As for now, Mr. Nick (supercalves) Housley and I are setting up shop in Ohio and looking to make some money this weekend at the Arnold Classic. nothing like $1,500 for the win in OHIO in FEBRUARY... It should be highly interesting. I am feeling creatively challenged and this blog is going to be borderline mind-numbingly boring, but hey, can't a guy be full bellied on Frosted Miniwheats and coffee and not feel like writing a fun, entertaining, and pointlessly whitty entry! CUT ME SOME SLACK! Ill be more creative once I hopefully get some money this weekend!

here are some picsof the new kits and Hincapie Barkley in action! And NO IM NOT FAT, i just have a lot of clothing on!

WOOOO COLLEGE!

Here is a fun little self promotion from the furman Student site FUnet. Cycling team riding strong by Melissa Murphy February 19, 2008 “In the last five years, Greenville has become the Mecca for cycling in the United States,” says Furman sophomore cyclist Spencer Beamer. With the beautiful scenery, favorable weather and light traffic, Furman is the ideal spot for cyclists. Just last year, a group of students approached Paul Thomas, an education professor and avid cyclist, to be the advisor for a new club on campus: The Furman Cycling Team. According to Beamer, “it was a little rough starting”, but the club has already doubled its’ member involvement and gained national recognition. Despite its’ 16-month existence, the cycling team is gaining momentum as they prepare for their upcoming season and second appearance at nationals this spring in Fort Collins, Colorado. In their first year, the team captured the Southern Conference Division II Title, which automatically qualified them for a spot at Nationals. While competing in Lawrence, Kansas at Nationals last year, the Furman cycling team placed 6th in the team trial, only one minute off the first-place finish. Furman female cyclist, Ashley Anderson placed fourth in the road race and Spencer Beamer captured the third place title for Divison II in the criterium, a shorter road race on a circuit. Their success, however, has not come without much hard work. Daily, the team trains under the guidance of racing veteran Glenn Thrift, fitness center equipment coordinator, and health and exercise science professor Scott Murr. On occasion, the team is privileged to ride with George Hincapie, one of the world’s most recognized professional riders who resides in Greenville. Hincapie is the only cyclist who rode with Lance Armstrong in each of his seven Tour de France victories. During the winter, the team builds endurance, logging 25-29 hours per week. Once the season begins, the workouts switch to high intensity interval training for speed. Close to peak condition, the men's cycling team has a very realistic chance of capturing the national championships this spring. In addition to the men's team, the women’s individual title is within reach of Ashley Anderson. The depth of the team is building upon “world class cyclists” such as Beamer and Anderson. Because Beamer rides for a professional team, his goals for the Furman team are to establish the club and make a name for the Furman cyclists. For Beamer, the club provides wonderful motivation with increasing number of training partners. The club was not set up strictly for those who race. The Furman cycling club encourages all who enjoy riding to come and be a part of the group. Not all riders joined with the same experience level, but the rapidly improving newcomers, Kit Hunter, Craig McKinney, Sean Kettring, Chris Butler and Todd McClure, are going to play key roles in determining the national title. Butler has only been riding for a few years but is one of the strongest riders on Furman’s team this year. He and fellow teammate David Hutton, who transferred from Miami to race at Furman, also ride for the Pla d’Adet/Hincapie Barkley U23 Development Team based out of Greenville. The professional teams allow the Furman cyclers to be able to compete outside of the regular season. The start of the Furman season begins in three weeks at Georgia Teach. Weekend of ups and downs...

Nothing like crazyness continued in my life. Finding out my saddle height was super super high (making me feel like complete hell and nearly doing damage to my leg), to a stellar time with the team (thanks nick for keeping me company at the hut hut), to running my slowest time up paris, to seeing Chris Butler run 26 seconds off the fastest ever time up paris (9:01 officially, which is like i said 26 second slower than LEVI at PROCHAMPS with the help of John DEVINE!), to finding out that I have officially failed my first class of college (and my first class at Furman meaning POOPY GPA) to getting my new team kits and what not...

Simply put... i have no idea whats going on in my life. Gotta love it!

anywho. Here are a few picures from the weekend!

rear in gear...

Total insanity. Thus has been the label now applied to my life. A second week of living hell doesn't explain what life has been for the past five days. Rest weeks are normally welcomed with open arms when it comes to riding. That being said, weeks such as this are when the full need to hop atop the saddle of a beautifully engineered work of agressiveness that is my bike in order to simply annihilate myself in the most masochistic way possible in the hope that it will maybe for a few minutes take my mind away from the paper I am going to write when i get back. Horrah for somiotic transitions in the poetry of Keats! Horrah for looking for a spoon to gouge my eyes out with. Sadly, I perservere. I know... depressing eh?

To say I'm looking forward to two weeks from now is the greatest understatement any human could make. No more drowning myself in coffee, two day old pasta, and weekends of looking at books all day. I pitty those who I will line up next to any given race when I have another week like this. I may not finish the race, but I can assure you that if there are people to put the wood to, I will be the one riding myself into oblivion simply to get the stress out. I'm sorry. It will happen.

As for now, i'm sitting quietly in the corner of einsteins bagels, listening to frou frou and the pixies, flipping through velo news and the abundant variety of cycling media the so sprawls the internet when I come across this I will in fact find this girl some day, and sweep her off her feet. Or, I will just gawk for a moment, realize that the girl two tables over has noticed my love spackled face, and is beginning to find it rather scary, so I contain my jawdropping to a later time.

Alright, enough of my useless banter, im off for a piece of coffee cake, and some more internet entertainment browsing...

OH YEAH! Some useless self promotion!
